Why I Promote Harm Reduction
My personal journey from risky habits to mindful, safer use, and why I now advocate for harm reduction.
Why I Promote Harm Reduction
For a long time, my relationship with certain substances was far from healthy. I often found myself overconsuming cannabis, not fully aware of the impact it was having on my body and mind. Over time, I noticed the toll it was taking: my lungs were burdened by the carbon and tar from my choices, and alcohol was affecting my energy, mood, and overall health.
Looking back, I realize I wasn't always responsible about where or how I consumed. There were times I used cannabis in public spaces, and even in someone else's car without making sure it was okay. In college, mixing cannabis with alcohol became a common occurrence, especially when I lived near campus. Now, living with my parents, I've had the chance to reflect on those habits and how they affected not just me, but those around me.
My parents were especially worried about my alcohol use, but they also expressed concern about my lung health. I have a tendency to take very large inhales, which probably didn't help matters. Their concern made me think more seriously about my choices and the impact they could have on my well-being.
There were moments when my actions didn't align with the rules or expectations of the places I was in. I sometimes crossed boundaries, both legal and social, by consuming in public or being publicly intoxicated. These experiences have taught me a lot about the importance of respecting both the law and the comfort of others.
Today, my approach is very different. I use cannabis medicinally and have shifted to primarily using a dry herb vaporizer, which is a much cleaner and more controlled method. I also make sure not to consume in public or in any way that would be against the law. This approach not only protects my health but also has positive social implications, like respecting the comfort of others and setting a good example. I'm also proud to share that as of writing this, I am three and a half weeks sober from alcohol. This milestone means a lot to me.
Promoting harm reduction isn't just about my past. It's about helping others make safer, more informed choices. I want to encourage responsibility, mindfulness, and respect for both personal health and the well-being of those around us. If sharing my journey can help even one person avoid the mistakes I made, then it's worth it.
